Author Guidelines

The Journal of Mormon Polygamy is an online platform that welcomes contributions from both credentialed scholars and non-credentialed writers, creating an inclusive space for diverse perspectives on the ongoing discourse over the Mormon practice of plural marriage. Our goal is to democratize the conversation in a setting that encourages open-mindedness, intellectual rigor, and mutual respect.

Typescripts must be in English, formatted in Times New Roman 12-point double-spaced, and should not be less than 5,000 nor more than 20,000 words, including references. Use the TAB key once for paragraph indents. Please avoid using underline or bold: for titles and for emphasis use italic. Authors should not submit manuscripts that have been previously published or are under consideration for publication elsewhere. All typescripts will be assessed by two experts in the field in a double-blind peer review. Authors may be asked to resubmit articles in response to the review evaluation.

Article references should be numbered consecutively throughout and appear as footnotes, which should be formatted in Chicago style. Do not use bibliographic references. Cited unpublished material should have full location reference. Repositories such as the Church History Library, Salt Lake City, UT (CHL); the Community of Christ Library and Archives, Independence, MO (CCLA); L. Tom Perry Special Collections, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT (HBLL); and the Joseph Smith Papers website (JSP) should be cited in full the first time they appear in the paper, and may be abbreviated thereafter. Links to documents should be included, but must appear along with the full footnote reference.

Reviews for the Journal of Mormon Polygamy should be approximately 1,000 words and provide a thoughtful, critical engagement with the book, podcast, film, exhibit, or other relevant media. Reviewers should briefly summarize the work’s content and scope, clearly identify the author or creator’s main arguments or objectives, and assess the contribution to the study of Mormon polygamy—whether historical, theological, cultural, or social. Reviews should consider the audience for whom the work is intended and its significance within broader historiographical or interpretive debates. Authors should write in accessible, clear prose while maintaining academic rigor and respectful tone, especially when engaging with controversial or contested interpretations. Strong reviews may also point out gaps, oversights, or methodological issues, and suggest directions for future research. When appropriate, reviewers are encouraged to situate the work within the context of other scholarship, especially highlighting its relevance to contemporary discussions around Mormonism and polygamy. Please avoid overly laudatory or dismissive language; strive instead for fair, balanced critique. All quotations or paraphrases from the reviewed material should be cited appropriately, and outside sources must be acknowledged. Reviews should not be written by individuals with significant personal or professional conflicts of interest related to the work under review.
